In the lead-up to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, Britco’s in-house design team was tasked with creating an exceptional home for the world’s athletes. The result was a lodge that won a prestigious international award for best modular building in North America.

The 4-storey Lodge includes 100 bedrooms and was constructed with a cast-in-place concrete section and partial basement. The exteriors are enhanced with elaborate site-built truss roofs and heavy, natural timber canopies to complement the resort’s architecture and provide protection from the elements. Inspired by the Olympic rings and medals, the interior is designed in gold, silver and bronze colors with circle motif features in the ceiling and floor details, millwork, wall finishes and lighting fixtures.

Designed to LEED™ Silver standards and stringent “Whistler Green” guidelines, the project incorporated a comprehensive Environmental and Wildlife Management Plan. All areas of the Athletes’ Village were heated and cooled with an innovative hydronic system that utilized an in-ground District Energy System. Low temperature radiant ceiling panels were used to cool and heat the rooms throughout the Lodge.

Britco’s modular approach to building construction allowed the organizers of the 2010 Winter Games to meet tight project timelines and to plan costs and budgets with certainty. As part of the 2010 Olympic Legacy, the Lodge will house Canadian athletes training at venues in Whistler for many years to come.
